The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has warned that rainfall will persist in several parts of the country on Thursday, April 9, with strong winds expected in parts of northern Kenya.
In a weather advisory, Kenya Met said rain would continue in areas within the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Coast, and Northeastern Kenya up to 9 pm.
“Rainfall is expected to continue in some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Coast, and Northeastern Kenya. Strong southerly to southeasterly winds of above 25 knots (12.5m/s) are expected over parts of Turkana and Marsabit counties,” the statement read.
In the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley, counties including Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Kisumu, Migori, Narok and others are expected to experience sunny intervals in the morning.
However, Kenya Met noted that showers and thunderstorms could develop in some areas later in the afternoon.
For the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, Kiambu, Nyeri, Meru, Embu, and Nyandarua, residents will experience sunny conditions in the morning, followed by possible afternoon showers, especially in highland areas.
In Northwestern Kenya, Turkana and Samburu counties are expected to remain largely sunny and dry throughout the day. However, strong southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots are likely in parts of Turkana.
Meanwhile, in Northeastern counties such as Wajir, Mandera, Garissa, Isiolo, and Marsabit, light rain is expected in the morning, with isolated afternoon showers. Strong winds are also forecast in parts of Marsabit.
Counties in the Southeastern lowlands, including Kajiado, Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, and Taita Taveta, will experience generally sunny intervals, with a slight chance of light morning rains and afternoon showers, particularly near Mt Kilimanjaro.
At the Coast, areas in Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Tana River will receive morning showers before transitioning to sunny conditions later in the day.
The advisory comes amid ongoing concerns over heavy rains across the country, which have already caused flooding in parts of Nairobi.
In a previous update, the government announced that families who lost loved ones in the March floods in Nairobi would receive Sh200,000 in compensation.
At least 24 people died and more than 70 vehicles were swept away after heavy rains triggered flash floods in the city.
