Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has extended goodwill to the Orange Democratic Movement as the party holds its National Delegates Conference (NDC) at Jamhuri Grounds, a meeting seen as crucial to its internal stability and future direction.
In a message shared on X, Kindiki described ODM as a partner in the current broad-based political arrangement, signalling continued cooperation between the government and sections of the opposition.
“Good luck, ODM, our partners in the broad-based administration,” he stated.
His remarks reflect the shifting political landscape, where collaboration between former rivals has intensified following recent engagements between the government and ODM leadership.
The message comes amid rising tensions within ODM, with rival factions holding parallel meetings in Nairobi, exposing deep divisions within one of Kenya’s largest political parties ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The NDC at Jamhuri Grounds, backed by the party’s mainstream leadership, is expected to attract thousands of delegates from across the country to deliberate on leadership and organisational issues.
At the same time, a rival faction linked to Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has rejected the conference and organised a separate gathering.
ODM, historically associated with opposition politics, has in recent months experienced a shift, with part of its leadership adopting a more conciliatory stance towards the government even as internal dissent grows.
The divisions stem from disagreements over party leadership and direction, with some leaders pushing for consolidation under the current leadership while others question the legitimacy of recent decisions.
The developments come against the backdrop of renewed calls by the government for inclusive political engagement following unrest witnessed in 2024.
