The government has unveiled new security measures ahead of the Easter holidays, including a crackdown on traffic offenders, as authorities move to enhance safety during the busy travel period.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, National Police Service (NPS) spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said heightened security operations will be rolled out as schools close and travel activity increases across the country.

“The National Police Service wishes to assure all Kenyans, residents, and visitors of their safety and security as the country prepares for the Easter holidays, which coincide with the closure of schools and the ongoing rainy season,” the statement read in part.

The NPS noted that the festive period is expected to see increased travel, social gatherings, and tourism, all of which present unique security challenges, prompting the implementation of a comprehensive strategy to maintain law and order.

As part of the plan, police have intensified traffic enforcement operations in collaboration with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), targeting strict compliance with road safety regulations nationwide.

Motorists, pedestrians, boda boda riders, and public service vehicle operators have been urged to exercise caution and adhere to traffic rules to minimise accidents.

Authorities warned against speeding, drunk driving, overloading, and distracted driving, while emphasising the importance of helmets, reflective gear, and the use of designated pedestrian crossings.

Vehicle owners were also advised to conduct regular maintenance and ensure their cars are roadworthy to reduce accidents caused by mechanical failure.

At the same time, the NPS has deployed additional officers and resources to boost security in key public areas, including shopping malls, places of worship, markets, transport hubs, and entertainment venues.

Enhanced patrols and surveillance have also been introduced to safeguard critical infrastructure and ensure the protection of life and property during the holiday period.

“We strongly encourage the public to remain vigilant and continuously share timely information about any suspicious activity. Reports can be made at any police station, to any law enforcement officer, or via our toll-free numbers 999 or 911,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the NTSA signalled possible changes to traffic regulations following high-level talks aimed at strengthening enforcement and reducing road fatalities.

This follows a meeting between NTSA Director General Nashon Kondiwa and Inspector General Douglas Kanja at Vigilance House in Nairobi, where they discussed key interventions to improve road safety.

The discussions focused on developing sustainable and consistent enforcement measures, which are expected to form the basis of a renewed nationwide crackdown on traffic violations.
