Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna has dismissed any chances of President William Ruto winning the 2027 General Election, citing what he describes as a “lack of a clear path to power” for the Kenya Kwanza leader.
Speaking in a recent interview, Sifuna said the party remains open to forming alliances with political formations that can help secure victory in the next polls. However, he was firm in ruling out any support for Ruto.
“Mimi ni wa one term, proudly so. The party has not made any decision to support William Ruto in 2027. This is why the central committee said they will talk with different political formations; that is the position of the party.
" I still would not support him; nobody can compel me to vote for William Ruto. I simply do not see a path to power for William Ruto,” Sifuna stated.
The ODM chief further warned that aligning with UDA could backfire, leaving the party in opposition again.
“For me, the easiest way for ODM to end up in opposition again is to join up with UDA. I know for a fact Ruto is going home; that one I am convinced 100%. I don’t see a pathway for him to power,” he added.
Sifuna’s comments come amid early discussions within opposition circles on coalition-building ahead of the 2027 elections. Analysts say his remarks reflect ODM’s strategy to position itself as a dominant force while remaining cautious about alliances with the ruling party.
The Secretary-General’s remarks are likely to intensify political debates on potential matchups in the next presidential contest, signaling an early stage of a heated campaign.
Edwin Sifuna reaffirmed that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) remains a member of the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition and pledged continued support for the alliance’s newly appointed leaders.
“ODM has a representation in the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition. We know that we are still members of that coalition.” Sifuna said.
He congratulated the coalition leadership and the newly appointed officials, adding, “I congratulate the new office holders and wish them the very best. They can count on the support of ODM Party as long as we remain members of the Azimio Coalition.”
The coalition announced a major reorganisation on Tuesday, aimed at strengthening internal coordination and refining its political strategy ahead of upcoming national engagements.
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka was named Party Leader of the coalition, Suba MP Caroli Omondi appointed Secretary General, and former Nairobi Town Clerk Philip Kisia named Executive Director.
Azimio said the changes were intended to “foster greater cohesion, effectiveness and unity as the coalition advances its agenda for the nation.”
The restructuring followed a joint session of the Azimio Council and National Executive Committee on Monday, chaired by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, where senior leaders reviewed the coalition’s structure, political environment, and long-term strategy.
