Members of the Siaya County Assembly have been urged not to pursue the impeachment of Governor James Orengo, with leaders calling for patience until the next General Election.
Alego/Usonga MP Samuel Atandi said removing the governor now would be unnecessary, noting that elections are barely a year away and voters should be left to decide his fate at the ballot.
“If there is anybody in Siaya planning to impeach Orengo, I want to persuade him not to do it," said Atandi, who was addressing a press conference at his South East Alego rural home.
Atandi revealed that local leaders have already identified a candidate to succeed Orengo, expressing confidence in a new leadership direction for the county.
“We have a candidate as people of Siaya, somebody who will work with the people of Siaya and will consult the people and ensure that Siaya is a progressive county” he said.
The MP, who chairs the National Assembly Budget Committee, accused Orengo of poor management, alleging that the governor has been using the “Linda Mwananchi” campaign to mask inefficiencies.
He further claimed that mismanagement had led to the disconnection of electricity at the governor’s office over unpaid bills and linked the administration to a fake health sector jobs scandal.
"More than 500 young people were employed for nine months after parting with bribes only to be sacked," he lamented.
However, a section of Siaya youth came out in support of Orengo, defending his leadership and urging him to aim higher in national politics.
Speaking in Ugunja town, youth leaders led by Kenneth Otieno, Fidel Omondi Oyuka, and Babu Victor praised Orengo’s democratic track record and dismissed criticism from what they termed as junior politicians within ODM.
“As youth, we feel that James Aggrey Bob Orengo should vie for the presidency," said Otieno, adding that Orengo’s experience and loyalty to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga make him a strong contender.
The youth leaders said they are mobilising support and registering voters ahead of the 2027 General Election to back Orengo’s potential bid.
