Drama unfolded on Wednesday, April 8, at the funeral of the late Ol Kalou MP, David Kiaraho, when Senator John Methu openly challenged President William Ruto.
Addressing the crowd, Methu told the President he did not fear him, adding that he would continue reminding him of unfulfilled promises to the people of Nyandarua.
“Ruto, I am still the same John Methu. I respect you as the President and Commander-in-Chief, but know this: I respect you, yet I do not fear you,” he said.
Methu also took aim at the UDA party, claiming the late Kiaraho had cautioned them against joining what he called the “wheelbarrow party” in 2022.
“When many were joining UDA, Kiaraho warned us it was a bad party. He chose another party, and the people here elected him on a Jubilee ticket,” he said.
Attempts by Kinangop MP Zachary Mwenya to stop Methu from continuing his tirade were unsuccessful, and the Senator further surprised the crowd by referring to DCP Party leader Rigathi Gachagua as the “People’s Deputy President,” ignoring DP Kithure Kindiki.
Methu even dared National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah to repeat his previous comments to Gachagua’s face. Eventually, Mwenya took the microphone, prompting Methu to return to his seat near President Ruto and apologise for the outburst.
ICT Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo and Tourism CS Rebecca Maina were seen speaking with Methu following the incident.
Earlier, funeral protocol had initially denied Methu access to the VIP section, allowing only Gachagua. Methu protested and eventually sat beside the former Deputy President.
This marked the first time Ruto and Gachagua shared a podium amid rising tensions between the two leaders.
Kiaraho passed away abroad in March while receiving treatment and is survived by his wife and children.
