EXPLAINER: How to Restore a Mistakenly Deleted Kenya Power Token

Accidentally deleting a prepaid token SMS can be maddening. Your lights are off, the fridge is warming up and you are stuck waiting for another message that may be delayed.


Kenya Power says the situation is common, especially when phones crash, messages are wiped, or multiple family members top up on the same meter.


The good news, you don’t have to buy a new token or visit an office, Kenya Power has provided a quick self-service ways to retrieve your last three purchased tokens.

“Accidentally deleted your token SMS? Don’t panic! You can easily retrieve your last 3 purchased tokens,” Kenya Power stated, pointing customers to its *977# menu and app.

Step-by-step: Restore your deleted token via USSD (*977#)

Kenya Power says the fastest route is USSD, which works on any phone and any network.


  • Dial *977# on your phone.

  • Select Option 1: Prepaid Services (Token)

  • Choose Latest Tokens or Token Details - if you want to search using an M-Pesa reference.

  • Select your meter number or add it to your profile if it’s not saved.

  • You will receive an SMS showing your last three tokens; copy the correct token into your meter.

Kenya Power emphasizes this route retrieves recent purchases quickly and is available nationwide.


If you haven’t saved your meter before, add it under Manage Meters to make the next retrieval instant.


Kenya Power also recommends the MyPower app for checking tokens without waiting for SMS.


  • Open the app, tap Bill/Token, enter your meter number and the latest transactions will display.


“You can retrieve the last three purchased tokens by dialling *977# or using the MyPower App,” Kenya Power advised.

Kenya Power admits that token SMS can be delayed or lost because of handset crashes, accidental deletions, or network congestion.


Saving your meter to profile in *977# and adding the meter in the app reduces repeat friction: your tokens are just a few taps away.


Kenya Power’s quick tips;


  1. Save your meter in the *977# profile so Latest Tokens appears instantly next time.

  2. If you used M-Pesa, you can pull a specific token under Token Details by selecting the M-Pesa reference tied to that purchase.

  3. Use the MyPower app as a backup vault for viewing tokens without relying on SMS delivery.

“*977# provides you with the ability to request token details select Prepaid, then ‘Token Details’ or Latest Tokens,” Kenya Power said.

Kenya Power recommends re-checking to see that you selected the correct meter and for M-Pesa lookups, that you picked the right reference number for that specific purchase.


If you still can’t retrieve it, Kenya power advises one to visit any of their customers cares offices around the the country.
