Kenya Power Announces Thursday Power Interruptions Across Six Regions

Kenya Power has issued a notice informing customers in various parts of the country to prepare for planned electricity interruptions on Thursday, August 21, 2025.


According to the utility firm, the interruptions are part of ongoing network maintenance works aimed at improving the reliability of supply.


The outages will affect customers in Nairobi, Western, Mt. Kenya Kiambu, and Coast regions, with restoration expected in the evening.


In Nairobi, the blackout will run from 7.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., affecting General Mathenge, Peponi Road, Peponi Gardens, Spring Valley Road, Peponi Cliff, Donyo Sabuk, Pine Wood Apartments, part of Eldama Ravine Road, and nearby areas.


“These areas have been experiencing intermittent interruptions due to load growth, and Thursday’s exercise is meant to ease the pressure on the network,” Kenya Power explained.

“The upgrades will allow us to provide more stable power to both households and businesses in Westlands.”

In Western Kenya, residents of Sondu in Kisumu County will also be without power between 8.30 a.m. and 5.00 p.m.


The affected areas include Kandaria, Ingutsi Primary, Ingutsi Centre, Ngege Primary, Maraboi Water, Chabera, and adjacent households.


“We have identified weak points in the Sondu line, and the maintenance team will be replacing equipment to minimize breakdowns,” the utility said.

“Customers should expect a more reliable supply once the works are completed.”

In the Mt. Kenya region, the utility listed multiple counties. Parts of Tharaka Nithi, specifically Igambang’ombe and Ntumbara will be affected from 8.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., including Kamatanka Market, Mpangua Village, Igambang’ombe, and Kamaindi Market.


Murang’a County will also face interruptions in Gatanga between 9.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m.


The affected locations include Githingiri Estate, Thika Green Estate, Mugumo, Farm Mugumo Police, Carton Manufacturer, Bahati Farm, Jowaki Estate, KARI Thika, and Memorial Hospital.


In Meru County, a wide stretch covering Ntugi, Kiirua, and Gitoro will experience outages from 8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.


Kenya Power listed institutions and residential areas among those affected, including Meru National Polytechnic, Consolata Mission Hospital Gitoro, Kiirua Mission Hospital, Three Steers Hotel, KCB Makutano and Safaricom BTS Makutano.


In Kiambu County, parts of Ndumboini and Uthiru will be cut off between 9.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m., with affected sites including Ndumboini Market, University of Nairobi Kabete Vet, Uthiru Girls, Njathaini and Kanyariri.


Juja and Mangu Road will also be affected within the same time frame, including Maryhill Girls, St. Francis Mangu Girls, several estates, farms, and markets.


At the Coast, Kilifi County residents in Marafa and Sabaki areas will face outages from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. Key affected points include Mambrui Town, Marafa, Garashi, KBC Marekebuni, Karibuni Villas, Mwembe Resort, Angels Bay, and Sabaki.


Kenya Power reassured customers that the works are necessary to enhance efficiency and minimize unplanned disruptions.


“We are carrying out routine maintenance across our network to reinforce stability and improve the quality of electricity supply,” the company said.

The firm also urged residents in the listed regions to make prior arrangements.


“We advise customers in the affected areas to plan accordingly and bear with us as we work to serve them better,” Kenya Power added.

The utility further pledged to restore electricity as soon as the work is completed.


"Power will be switched back on immediately after the maintenance exercise is over. If we finish earlier than scheduled, supply will be restored without delay,” Kenya power assured.
