A sombre mood has engulfed Moi University following the death of a second-year law student in an incident police believe to be suicide.
Reginah Wanjiku, 20, was found dead on Wednesday, March 25, at her rented house within Annex Shopping Centre in the Sugunanga area of Eldoret.
Police said her body was discovered hanging from the door grill, with a leso reportedly used in the incident.
Authorities also recovered a suicide note in which she apologised and expressed love to those close to her.
According to police, the alarm was raised after her mother unsuccessfully tried to reach her by phone, prompting her to contact the student’s friends to check on her.
The body was moved to the mortuary pending a post-mortem examination, as detectives seek to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The case was among six suicide incidents reported across the country on the same day, highlighting growing concerns over mental health challenges.
In Emurua Dikirr, Bomet County, a 24-year-old man identified as Dominic Kipngetich was also found dead in his house in a suspected suicide.
Similar incidents were reported in Nyacheki in Kisii County and Riruta in Nairobi.
According to the World Health Organization, factors contributing to suicide include joblessness, academic pressure, financial and legal difficulties, as well as mental health conditions such as depression and bipolar disorder.
Separately, police in Kuria West Sub-county, Migori County, have launched investigations into the suspected murder of a young woman found dead in a guest house in Kehancha Township.
The woman, identified only as Monicah and believed to be about 20 years old, was found lying on a bed with foam coming out of her mouth. Her hair also appeared disturbed, with signs that some had been plucked.
Preliminary investigations indicate she had checked into the room on the evening of March 25 at around 9.00 pm in the company of a man identified only as Mwita, who is now the prime suspect.
Police said the suspect is believed to have fled during the night. The body was moved to Kehancha Sub-County Hospital Mortuary as investigations continue to establish the exact cause of death.
