The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced that Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) will resume on Monday, September 29, 2025, as part of its constitutional mandate to prepare the country for the next General Election scheduled for August 10, 2027.
The exercise is expected to target millions of Kenyans, especially young people who have recently turned 18, as well as citizens who have not registered before or need to update their voter details.
In a Press statement issued on August 28th, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon emphasized the importance of the exercise, saying it is a crucial step in strengthening Kenya’s democracy.
“Registering to vote is not just a constitutional right, it is a powerful act of responsibility. Your voice matters,” he said.
The Commission has already rolled out a series of preparatory measures to ensure the exercise runs smoothly.
These include mapping out registration centres across the country, holding stakeholder consultative forums, configuring and testing Kenya Integrated Election Management System (KIEMS) kits, and training registration personnel.
Other preparations include gazettement of officers, packaging and distribution of materials, and ensuring compliance with data protection laws.
Eligible Kenyans will be able to register at any IEBC constituency office, except in areas where by-elections are ongoing. Services will include new registration, transfer of voter details, correction of particulars, and inspection of voter status.
Registration forms A to E will be used for different services, while biometric data will be captured for all new registrants.
However, during this phase, the Commission will not conduct registration for Kenyans living abroad or those in correctional facilities, citing ongoing policy reviews.
Ethekon urged the public, particularly first-time voters, to take advantage of the opportunity.
“As we look ahead to the General Election in 2027, let us commit to building a nation where every voice counts. Let’s be the generation that doesn’t sit back but stands up, shows up, and votes for Kenya,” he said.
The Commission further promised to gazette the details of the exercise and maintain transparency throughout the process, reaffirming its commitment to credible and inclusive elections.
