The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning of increased rainfall and isolated storms expected from Tuesday, August 12, through Monday, August 18, 2025, affecting multiple parts of the country.

Residents in the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, and parts of the North-western region should prepare for intensified rains, with some areas likely to experience localised thunderstorms.

“An increase in rainfall intensity is expected in several parts of the country, with isolated storms particularly in the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, and North-western Kenya,” the department said in a statement on X.

Intermittent cold and cloudy conditions will affect parts of the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, South-eastern Lowlands and the Rift Valley.

Temperature swings are expected, with daytime highs exceeding 30°C in North-eastern and North-western Kenya, while night temperatures may drop below 10°C in areas around the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley and near Mt. Kilimanjaro.

The department also warned of strong southerly to south-easterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.86 m/s) along the Coast, Kenya’s territorial waters and parts of the South-eastern Lowlands, North-eastern and North-western regions.

Mariners and coastal communities are advised to exercise caution due to rough seas.

Regional forecasts indicate afternoon showers and thunderstorms in Western and Rift Valley counties such as Kakamega, Kisumu, Nakuru and Kericho, with daytime temperatures between 28°C and 30°C and night lows around 11°C.

Nairobi and Central Kenya will experience cloudy mornings, sunny intervals and afternoon showers, with heavier rainfall expected on Saturday.

In the North-eastern region, dry and sunny conditions will dominate, with light showers possible toward the weekend.

Along the Coast, areas like Mombasa, Kilifi and Lamu will remain warm with occasional light rain.

The public is advised to stay alert, especially in flood-prone areas and those vulnerable to strong winds, and to follow official weather updates closely.
