Kenyan Footballer Dies After Vicious Attack

The Kenyan football fraternity has been plunged into mourning following the death of Kakamega Homeboyz defender Silas Abungana.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Kakamega Homeboyz FC confirmed that the player passed away while receiving treatment at Kakamega County General Hospital, days after featuring for the club in a league match against Mara Sugar.
Abungana’s death sent shockwaves across the Football Kenya Federation circles, with clubs, players, officials, and fans expressing grief over the sudden loss of a player who was actively involved in top-flight football.
The club said Abungana died a few minutes before midnight on Wednesday, February 4, after succumbing to head injuries sustained during an attack on the night of Tuesday, February 3.
According to the statement, the defender was admitted to Kakamega County General Hospital following the attack and was undergoing treatment when his condition worsened.
Despite medical efforts, he later passed away, leaving the club and the wider football community in deep grief.
“The club can confirm that Silas passed away a few minutes before midnight on Wednesday, February 4, while receiving treatment at Kakamega County General Hospital, after succumbing to head injuries sustained during an attack on Tuesday, February 3,” the club said.
Kakamega Homeboyz described Abungana’s death as a devastating loss and appealed for privacy and respect for his family during the difficult period.
The club noted that Abungana was a disciplined and committed professional who served the team with pride.
“During this incredibly difficult time, we respectfully request privacy for Silas’ family, teammates, friends, and club officials as we come to terms with this unimaginable loss. The club will issue further communication in due course. Rest in peace, Silas,” the statement concluded.
