Kericho Governor Erick Mutai has been impeached by Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) following a vote on Friday afternoon, marking the second time he has faced removal proceedings.
The motion to remove him from the office was supported by a total of 33 MCAs out of the 47,
surpassing the required two-thirds majority.
The motion was moved by Sigowet MCA Kiprotich Rogony during a special sitting convened at the Kericho County Assembly chambers.
The session witnessed intense debate before the vote and chaos erupted immediately after the Speaker confirmed Mutai’s impeachment.
The motion accused Governor Mutai of gross violation of the Constitution, abuse of office and mismanagement of county resources.
Voting was conducted electronically, with Mutai present and accompanied by his lawyers. During his previous impeachment attempt, 31 MCAs voted in favour of removal.
However, the matter was later overturned when it reached the Senate, allowing Mutai to retain his position.
If the Senate upholds the County Assembly’s latest decision, Mutai will be permanently removed from office.
