Chaos and Smoke: Blaze Sparks Panic at Dr Aggrey High School in Taita Taveta

A wave of fear swept through Dr Aggrey High School in Taita Taveta County after a fire erupted on the afternoon of Thursday, April 30, 2026, forcing students into a frantic rush for safety.

The Kenya Red Cross confirmed the incident, noting that the origin of the blaze had not yet been established at the time of reporting. In a brief statement, the humanitarian agency indicated that the situation was still unfolding and under active response.

Images circulating online reveal a fierce inferno tearing through what appears to be a classroom block, with dense plumes of smoke rising high above the school compound. The atmosphere on the ground was tense as both students and teachers were left momentarily stranded, unsure of the next course of action, while others hurried to distance themselves from the danger.

Emergency responders from the Kenya Red Cross, alongside local residents and members of the school community, quickly mobilised to contain the flames and prevent further destruction. Their coordinated efforts were ongoing as authorities worked to stabilise the situation.

By the time of publication, no injuries or fatalities had been confirmed, though officials were expected to visit the scene to assess the damage and initiate investigations.

This incident is not isolated. The institution has previously faced similar misfortune: in 2025, learning was abruptly halted after two dormitories were destroyed in a separate fire, resulting in a temporary closure.

The recurrence of such incidents has reignited concern over the rising cases of school fires, particularly so soon after the resumption of the second academic term.

Elsewhere, a similar tragedy unfolded at Mithiru Girls High School, where a dormitory was reduced to ashes on the same day, leading to significant losses. Preliminary accounts from the school administration pointed to a possible electrical fault as the trigger of the blaze. Parents were subsequently asked to collect their children, with no clear timeline provided for the resumption of classes.

One concerned parent recounted receiving a sudden call from the school instructing them to pick up their child following the indefinite closure, as key boarding facilities had been destroyed.

The back-to-back incidents have intensified scrutiny over safety standards in learning institutions, with many now calling for urgent investigations and stronger preventive measures to curb the alarming trend.
