Fast-rising boxer Mbavu Destroyer, born Ferdinand Omondi, has broken his silence following his dramatic defeat to Portifas Odipo, popularly known as Majembe, during the much-anticipated Vurugu Fight Night held in Nairobi.
The bout, which had generated massive buzz online and attracted national attention, ended in controversy after Majembe secured victory in a clash that Mbavu now claims went beyond the rules of boxing.
Speaking after the fight, Mbavu expressed frustration, alleging that illegal blows played a key role in his defeat and insisting the match crossed into dangerous territory.
“Umenivunja njwang’a ni sawa. Siku hizi boxing imekua kupigana njwang’a… aina noma… This is not boxing,” he said.
His remarks loosely translate to a complaint about being hit below the belt, accusing his opponent of abandoning proper boxing rules.
The fight, staged at the Kasarani Indoor Arena on Saturday, April 4, started at a high intensity, with Majembe immediately taking an aggressive approach and pinning Mbavu in his corner.
Mbavu, on the other hand, adopted a cautious strategy, focusing on defense as he attempted to absorb pressure from his opponent.
In the second round, the bout was briefly interrupted after excited fans surged toward the ring, forcing officials to pause the action and restore order.
Majembe maintained his dominance into the third round, consistently pressing forward and landing significant punches as Mbavu struggled to gain control.
The turning point came in the fourth round when Mbavu went down following what appeared to be a low blow, prompting immediate medical attention and a lengthy stoppage.
Unable to recover and continue, the fight was called off, leaving the judges to determine the outcome based on the completed rounds.
Judges awarded Majembe a unanimous victory after he outscored Mbavu across the opening three rounds, sealing a decisive win despite the controversial ending.
Fight scorecards showed Majembe leading with thirty points against Mbavu’s twenty-seven in both the first and second rounds, before extending his advantage to thirty-two against twenty-seven in the third round.
Event organisers, led by Oga Obinna alongside boxing official Reuben Ndolo, later presented Majembe with the winner’s belt as he was officially declared champion of the Vurugu Boxing Challenge.
The outcome has since sparked debate among fans and stakeholders, with questions emerging over officiating standards and whether a rematch could be considered.
