Kenya’s celebrated rapper Nyamari Ongegu, popularly known as Nyashinski, has signed a landmark recording deal with global music powerhouse Sony Music, in what is being hailed as a major boost for East Africa’s music industry.
The announcement was made on Thursday, August 14, 2025, through the label’s official Instagram page, coinciding with the release of his new single Tai Chi.
“Big welcome to the Sony Music Africa family @realshinski ‘Tai Chi’ out at midnight EAT,” the label posted.
Sony Music Africa’s Managing Director, Sean Watson, described the signing as a significant moment for the region.
“Nyashinski represents everything the world needs to see from East Africa: authenticity, versatility, longevity, and artistic excellence. This partnership is about more than music; it’s about elevating the culture and giving East African voices the global platform they deserve,” he said.
Nyashinski echoed the sentiment, noting the deal was a chance to share the region’s talent with the world.
“This partnership with Sony Music is more than just a deal; it’s a recognition of East Africa’s rich musical talent and a platform to showcase our stories to the world,” he said.
The award-winning artist also shared his excitement on Instagram.
“Paperwork done. Let’s work. Excited about the next chapter! Thank you for the warm welcome," he wrote.
The agreement is expected to open new opportunities for Nyashinski’s career while strengthening East Africa’s presence on the global music stage.
Nyashinski's path from the early 2000s as a member of the iconic Kenyan rap group Kleptomaniax to his rise as a solo artist highlights his artistic resilience and adaptability.
His break from music, which he spent in the United States, enhanced his creative edge when he returned to Kenya in 2015, leading to a string of hits that solidified his status as a cultural icon.
