Former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua has shed light on an alleged meeting between President William Ruto and Sudanese Rapid Support Forces (RSF) leader Mohammed Hamdan, also known as Hemedti.

Did William Ruto meet with the RSF?

Speaking on Citizen TV’s The Explainer on August 27, Gachagua claimed he personally facilitated the meeting between the two leaders, revealing details previously unknown to the public.

According to Gachagua, a sitting president cannot directly request a meeting with a junior leader from another state.

He claimed that he stepped in to organise the discussion at President Ruto’s request.

“Ruto has a working relationship with Hemedti, the leader of RSF. I have evidence of this. I facilitated the meeting at Ruto’s request because, diplomatically, a president cannot invite a deputy president of another country directly. Hemedti was the deputy president of Sudan then,” Gachagua explained.

He further alleged that the meeting was “official” but centred around business, trade, and gold.

“Initially, I did not know the purpose of the meeting, but what could I have done? He was my boss,” Gachagua added.

The former DP-turned-Ruto's fiercest critic made these revelations while addressing previous claims that President Ruto has engaged with extremist groups in the region, including Al-Shabaab militants.

Gachagua also urged President Ruto to respond publicly and prove his allegations false, referencing a recent US Senate amendment bill reviewing Kenya’s non-NATO ally status over concerns about foreign relations and alleged links to extremist groups.
