The Russian government has responded following widespread outrage over viral videos allegedly involving a Russian man and several women from Kenya and Ghana.

The clips, which have circulated widely on social media, triggered public anger and prompted both the Kenyan and Ghanaian governments to initiate investigations into the matter.

In a statement issued on Monday, February 16, the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Ghana said it had taken note of media reports concerning the alleged involvement of a purported Russian citizen in unethical conduct involving African women.

“The Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Ghana has taken note of the reports in the Ghanaian media on the alleged involvement of a supposedly Russian citizen engaged in unethical activities and recorded those acts without consent,” the statement read.

While acknowledging the seriousness of the allegations, the embassy did not confirm the identity of the individual or verify his nationality.

The videos have sparked heated debate online, with many social media users in Kenya and Ghana demanding justice for the women involved. The footage allegedly shows the man approaching women in public places, initiating conversations and later arranging private meetings at a short-stay apartment.

Some of the encounters were reportedly filmed secretly and later shared without the women’s consent, further fueling outrage across both countries and beyond.

The clips appear to show the man striking up casual conversations in malls, supermarkets and along streets in Nairobi and Mombasa, complimenting the women, requesting their phone numbers and persuading them to visit his apartment — in some cases within hours of meeting.

Meanwhile, the Kenyan government has ordered a coordinated cross-border investigation to trace the suspected individual. Hanna Cheptumo, the Gender Cabinet Secretary, described the alleged acts as a serious violation of constitutional rights.

Speaking to the press, Cheptumo directed security and investigative agencies to urgently pursue the matter and collaborate with international authorities due to its cross-border nature.

“This act is not only a violation of personal dignity and privacy as protected under Articles 28 and 31 of the Constitution of Kenya but also an affront to our national values, cultural integrity, and the safety of women and girls,” she said.
