President William Ruto on Thursday, January 29, unveiled a new funding initiative targeting 90,000 Kenyan youth who did not complete formal education.
The programme, announced during the Nyota Capital Disbursement event in Kisii, aims to equip young people with practical skills to generate income
Under the scheme, the government will provide each participant with Ksh36,000 to cover course fees and exams, enabling them to earn certificates in trades such as plumbing, carpentry, masonry, and electrical work.
The initiative will be accessible via the Hustler Fund platform, launching this evening. Youth who have already qualified for the Nyota Fund are not eligible for the new programme.
"We are opening a platform on *254#. We want to equip 90,000 youth with skills. We will support you with Ksh36,000 for training and cover your exams so you can get certified and use these skills in life," Ruto said.

The President also highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to create employment opportunities abroad through the National Employment Authority Integrated Management System.
“We have opportunities in the United Kingdom and the Middle East. If you cannot afford the travel, the government will fund your ticket, and you can repay later,” he added.
During the launch, Kisii Governor Simba Arati announced waivers on business licenses for enterprises started by Nyota programme beneficiaries.
Nyamira County Governor Amos Nyaribo said participants from his county would enjoy a five-year break on fees.
Ruto also dismissed claims that the Nyota Fund was a scam, assuring that approved funds would be deposited into “Pochi la Biashara” accounts to separate business money from personal use.
The launch comes amid criticism from some quarters, including Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who described the fund as a handout.
The Kenya Kwanza administration, however, emphasised its commitment to tackling youth unemployment by supporting self-employment and skills development.
