President William Ruto has vowed to take action against Members of Parliament allegedly involved in collecting bribes, warning that both givers and recipients will face consequences.
Speaking on Monday in Karen, where he and ODM leader Raila Odinga chaired a joint Parliamentary Group meeting, the President raised concerns over MPs reportedly demanding money to influence legislation, including the Anti-Money Laundering Bill.
“Did you know that a few members of parliament collected Ksh10 million so that you could pass the Anti-Money Laundering Bill? Did you get the money?” Ruto asked.
He added that some individuals are undermining Parliament’s credibility by collecting funds in its name, noting that much of the money never reaches parliamentary coffers but instead benefits a few people.
“There are people who are destroying the credibility of parliament. They are collecting money in the name of parliament. Most of the time, that money never gets to parliament, it gets to a few people,” the President said.
Ruto warned that those involved will face legal action.
“We are not going to shame them. We are going to arrest them. Whoever is giving and whoever is being given, we are going to sort them out,” he stated.
The President further pressed MPs to acknowledge the problem and commit to accountability.
He noted that bribery within Parliament is a serious issue that, if unchecked, could undermine Kenya’s democratic institutions and slow down the country’s development agenda.
“The reality, is that there is a problem, and unless we sort it out, we are going to destroy our nation,” Ruto said, emphasizing the importance of integrity and transparency in public office.
