The Social Health Authority (SHA) and the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) have handed over 1,188 case files to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) as part of a major crackdown on healthcare fraud.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale confirmed the move, terming it a critical milestone in the fight against fraudulent and non-compliant healthcare facilities and individuals.
“This action targets fraudulent and non-compliant healthcare facilities and individuals, marking a critical milestone in the ongoing effort to protect public funds and safeguard the integrity of Kenya's healthcare system,” Duale said.
The files contain detailed evidence to support prosecutions and are the outcome of weeks of joint action by SHA, KMPDC and the Clinical Officers Council (COC), including forensic audits and digital system checks.
These audits uncovered widespread malpractice, including upcoding where facilities bill for more expensive procedures than were actually performed and falsification of medical records.
SHA has already suspended 85 health facilities to allow for investigations, according to the Health CS.
“SHA, in line with its mandate, has suspended a total of Eighty-Five (85) health facilities for fraudulent activities to allow for investigations,” Duale stated.
The Ministry of Health emphasized that these fraudulent practices directly harm patients and drain public resources intended for healthcare delivery.
The crackdown forms part of the government’s broader effort to restore public trust in the health sector and ensure accountability.
Duale reiterated the importance of public participation in rooting out fraud, urging Kenyans to report suspicious activities through SHA’s toll-free line 147.
The handover was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Health, SHA, KMPDC and law enforcement agencies, signaling a coordinated approach to tackling corruption and protecting Kenya’s healthcare system.
