The Kenya Meteorological Department has released its 7-day weather forecast, cautioning that while rainfall is expected to decrease across much of the country, some regions could still see isolated heavy showers.
According to the outlook covering Tuesday, March 10 to Monday, March 16, overall rainfall intensity and coverage will reduce. However, sporadic downpours are likely to persist, particularly in the southern half of Kenya.
"Rainfall is expected to decline in both intensity and coverage, but occasional heavy showers may still occur over select areas," the department reported.
Areas Likely to Experience Heavy Rainfall
The weatherman highlighted that certain regions remain prone to intermittent heavy rain. These include:
Nairobi and the Central Highlands
Sections of the Rift Valley
Western Kenya and the Lake Victoria Basin
South-eastern Lowlands and the South Coast
Residents in these areas have been advised to remain vigilant, as localised heavy rainfall could occur despite the overall decrease in rain activity.
Temperature Outlook
Alongside rainfall predictions, the weatherman also released a temperature forecast showing variations across different regions:
Hotter areas: The Coast, South-eastern Lowlands, and parts of North-eastern and North-western Kenya are expected to see daytime temperatures above 30°C.
Cooler areas: Night-time temperatures may drop below 10°C in parts of the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley, and areas surrounding Mount Kilimanjaro.
The warning follows a period of intense rainfall that caused flooding, disrupted transport, and affected normal activities in several towns.
At least 40 people were reportedly killed due to the floods, with Nairobi recording the highest number of fatalities.
