Detectives from the DCI are looking into an incident where a young woman was allegedly strangled last night, March 17th, by two men in the Jua Kali area of Embakasi, Nairobi.

Three residents of Jua Kali responded to a distress call after hearing a disturbance near their homes around midnight, where they discovered unknown men assaulting the young woman.

The unidentified men fled into the darkness as the responders arrived. The woman is thought to be in her early 20s.

The responders later proceeded to Embakasi Police Station to file a report about the incident, and the police accompanied them.

Police, including CSI personnel from the Nairobi area, arrived at the scene to discover the unresponsive body of the woman, with her underpants lowered and strangulation marks on her neck.

The woman was subsequently transferred to the city mortuary, where she awaits identification and an autopsy.

Early this month, a half-clothed woman was discovered abandoned in a borehole close to Rota beach in Kisumu West, Kisumu county.

The body of the 30-year-old woman is thought to have been murdered by an unidentified individual(s), wrapped in a bedsheet, bound, and subsequently discarded in the borehole.

Villagers reported that the woman, a caretaker at a fish fingerling rearing site, disappeared on Tuesday, March 4th.

Police data indicates that at least 97 women in Kenya were victims of femicides—intentional killings motivated by gender—between August and October of the previous year.

Based on media reports, the Africa Data Hub collective compiled figures indicating there were at least 75 femicides in 2023 and 46 in the previous year.
