Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has spoken out after a photo showing him drinking alongside Nick Ruto, the son of President William Ruto, went viral on social media.
The MP dismissed the claims that the image was recent, saying it was taken years ago before he gave up alcohol.
“Let me clarify this for the record. The last time I drank alcohol was on January 17, 2020. The photo was taken in 2018,” Babu stated in his official social media accounts.
The legislator used the opportunity to highlight his personal transformation, linking it to his political ambitions.
“I will transform the lives of Nairobians and Kenyans the way I transformed my life,” he added, underscoring his intention to run for Nairobi governorship in 2027.
His remarks come amid speculation about his political future, including his loyalty to ODM and his association with the Kenya Moja movement.

Babu maintained that the viral image did not reflect his current lifestyle, stressing that he has remained committed to sobriety for more than half a decade.
“I have been sober for the past five years,” he reiterated, insisting that the old photo should not be used to misrepresent his present values or character.
The clarification marks one of the public statements Owino has made about his personal growth, as he continues to position himself as a reform-driven leader ahead of the 2027 polls.
