Chaos erupted in Nairobi’s Central Business District on Monday afternoon after police lobbed teargas at a rally led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Kalonzo Musyoka near the Tea Room area.
The disruption occurred as Kalonzo was introducing Wiper Party members and aspirants who had accompanied him to the event.
Videos circulating online show that shortly after one of the aspirants finished addressing the crowd, live media coverage was abruptly interrupted. Thick plumes of smoke were then seen rising as supporters scattered in panic.
Moments later, Gachagua and other leaders were hurriedly escorted away along River Road, with teargas smoke billowing behind them. Photos observed by The Hourly News Wave captured the tense scenes as police moved in to disperse the gathering.
The opposition leaders had earlier visited the office of the Inspector General of Police to raise concerns over alleged police brutality before proceeding to address supporters in the CBD.
Following the incident, the leaders accused the government of orchestrating the chaos.
Gachagua directly blamed Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, alleging that he ordered police to disrupt the rally.
The incident comes barely a day after a similar confrontation in Kitengela, where a rally organised by an ODM faction led by Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino was also dispersed using teargas.
In the Kitengela incident, two people reportedly lost their lives and more than 50 others were injured after police broke up the meeting.
More details to follow.
