Githurai Ward Member of the County Assembly (MCA) Deonysias Mwangi has tendered his resignation, citing persistent frustrations and unaddressed challenges affecting residents of his ward.

In a letter dated Wednesday, September 17, and addressed to the Speaker of the Nairobi County Assembly, Mwangi said his decision was informed by years of raising issues that remained unresolved, despite being captured in the Hansard and escalated to relevant county departments.

Mwangi said his exit will officially take effect on Monday, November 1, 2025, in line with Article 194(1)(b) of the Constitution.

“This has been one of the most difficult decisions of my life, given the sovereign trust bestowed upon me by the people of Githurai Ward. However, I remain deeply grateful for the confidence they placed in me,” he wrote.

Mwangi highlighted what he described as years of neglect in Githurai, pointing to dilapidated roads such as Chuo Road, Ruiru Powerline Road, Chiro Road, Mucero Road, Kweche Road, and Kirogo Road.

He said that despite repeated pleas, little has been done to restore these vital links that residents depend on daily.

He further lamented the state of Githurai Level 3 Hospital, which he noted remains understaffed, under-equipped, and poorly maintained, with inadequate sanitation facilities.

Promises to improve and maintain the Githurai Sports Ground, he added, have also been broken, while some projects including road works were misrepresented as complete even before any construction had begun.

He also raised concerns over incomplete drainage works, poor garbage management, and stalled projects such as grading and gravelling of Mbutu Road and Ndunama Road, all of which were allocated funds under specific county contracts.

“These are not mere expectations but sovereign aspirations of the people of Githurai Ward, anchored in law, public participation forums, and integrated development plans,” Mwangi stated.

The MCA, elected on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket, further lamented that the county governance system had become unresponsive, unaccountable, and detached from the lived realities of his constituents.

Mwangi expressed appreciation to his party, Speaker of the Assembly, colleagues, and residents for their support, noting that his resignation was meant to uphold the trust of his voters rather than continue serving under circumstances where their issues were not being addressed.

His resignation now leaves the Githurai Ward seat vacant, pending formal communication from the County Assembly and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on the way forward.

As he steps down, Mwangi’s resignation comes at a moment of political tension for Governor Johnson Sakaja.

Sakaja recently survived an impeachment motion brought by several MCAs who accused him of failing to fulfill campaign promises, delaying the delivery of ward development programs, and mismanaging funds for bursaries.

The motion was suspended following interventions from major political figures including President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga, who brokered discussions between the governor and the county assembly.

The agreement gave Sakaja a window approximately one month to respond and address the grievances raised.

Mwangi’s journey into politics is less documented in public sources, but it is known that he was elected in the August 2022 elections under the UDA ticket to represent Githurai Ward.

He assumed the role with the responsibilities of oversight, service delivery, and representing the people in County Assembly sessions and committees.
