The government says it has created more than 1.3 million jobs in its first three years in office, attributing the gains to investments in agriculture, housing, education, ICT and the creative economy.

Speaking at the Harambee Annex Media Centre on Monday, government spokesman Isaac Mwaura said the administration’s focus on agricultural transformation, food security and lowering the cost of living has unlocked new opportunities for Kenyans across the country.

“In agriculture, reforms in coffee, tea, sugar and cotton are bearing fruit,” he said.

“The revival of six cotton ginneries has created 700 jobs in Busia, Bungoma, Kitui and Embu, while cotton farming and textile activities are now supporting over 23,000 rural jobs.”

He added that the distribution of 100 high-volume grain dryers is expected to generate more than 10,000 jobs in cooperatives and small enterprises.

On housing, Mwaura said the Affordable Housing Programme has created over 330,000 jobs in construction, manufacturing, professional services, supply chains and transport.

In the education sector, the Teachers Service Commission has employed 76,000 teachers since 2022 and advertised 24,000 new posts this year.

“By January 2026, we will have hired 100,000 teachers, and by 2027, we will have reached our target of 116,000,” he said.

Mwaura also pointed to the ICT and creative economy as a growing source of work.

He said 50,000 kilometres of fibre optic cable have been laid across the country, connecting schools, villages and businesses, while Konza Technopolis is now home to 16 innovation firms.

Investments in art galleries, theatres and musicals, he added, have generated more than 1,000 jobs.

The government is also counting bilateral labour agreements as part of its gains. Mwaura said more than 452,000 Kenyans have secured jobs abroad since 2022, compared to 14,000 previously.

On health, he reported that 107,000 community health promoters (CHPs) are now receiving stipends of Sh2,500 monthly, while 18,831 have been trained and equipped with smartphones and medical kits.

The Spokesman said the Kenya Defence Forces and the National Police Service will be recruiting officers in October, but warned applicants against bribery and corruption during the exercise.

In youth affairs, he said the NYOTA programme will train 100,000 young people in entrepreneurship, with each of the 1,450 wards nominating 70 participants to receive Sh50,000 seed capital to start businesses.

More than 32,000 youth, he added, have already been trained in entrepreneurship and supported with loans worth over Sh400 million.

“We are committed to improving the welfare of all Kenyans without discrimination in adherence to the dictates of our progressive constitution,” Mwaura said.

“Achievement of our promises under the Better Plan is well on course, projected to create a better country for us all.”
