Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja on Tuesday appeared before the Senate leadership and a watchdog committee, ending a police search for him, and reaffirmed his commitment to accountability and transparency.
Speaking at Parliament, Sakaja emphasized his unblemished record, saying,
“I am the first governor of this city without a single corruption scandal. Tell me one instance where I have been accused, never. I have nothing to hide from the Senate or from the public.”
He highlighted his long-standing engagement with oversight bodies, noting,
“I have appeared before these committees many times; six times this year alone and about ten times last year. I have even responded to audit queries dating back to 2015, including those from my predecessors.”
Sakaja said his decision to personally drive to the Senate was intended to demonstrate his willingness to cooperate fully with parliamentary committees.
“Accountability is important, but it must be undertaken in the right way,” he said.
On efforts to resolve tensions between the Senate and the Council of Governors (CoG), the governor added,
“I have spoken to the Speaker of the Senate, the Chair of the Council of Governors, and my fellow governors. We need to resolve these issues so that we can be held accountable as required by the Senate.”
He further expressed confidence in achieving an unqualified audit opinion, saying,
“Disclaimer of opinion to qualified, and I am going to achieve an unqualified opinion.”
