Traffic along the Nairobi Expressway was temporarily disrupted on Thursday morning after a Land Rover caught fire near the Southern Bypass entrance B.
The incident occurred around 9:04 am at K13, Moja Expressway Company confirmed. Patrol teams, working alongside the Kenya Police Service, safely evacuated all passengers and extinguished the blaze. No injuries were reported.
“Motorists are advised to drive with caution at K13 near the Southern Bypass Entrance B as our team clears debris following a successfully contained vehicle fire. Your safety is our priority,” the company said.
Drivers were urged to report any mechanical issues immediately via the rescue hotline 0111039888, while general assistance can be requested on 0111039777. Authorities praised the swift response, which prevented the fire from escalating, and reminded motorists to exercise caution in the event of vehicle breakdowns.
The fire comes barely a week after a fuel tanker collided with a lorry near the Southern Bypass, igniting under a bridge near the Swaminarayan Tunnel Bridge behind the Carnivore Restaurant. The collision killed one driver and seriously injured another, according to Lang’ata Sub-County Police Commander Pius Mwanthi.
In that incident, the tanker was carrying fuel while the lorry transported bales of flour. Witnesses said some road users, including boda boda riders, rushed to scoop spilled fuel, raising serious safety concerns.
Fuel-related accidents have a history of causing fatalities in Kenya, including a 2009 tanker disaster in Sachangwan, Nakuru County, which claimed more than 100 lives.
