Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is facing growing political pressure after Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), led by Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai, announced they have finalised a motion to impeach him.
The motion reportedly contains more than 20 substantive charges and has already secured enough signatures to meet the threshold for tabling.
Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, September 1, 2025, Alai said the motion targets mismanagement of county services, including the privatisation of core public health functions and failures in infrastructure maintenance.
“I think what has been happening in Nairobi is that we have ignored the problem, and now the fish has rotten from the head. We have tried to highlight this. He has looked for excuses why he’s not doing it. Nairobi needs action, not excuses,” Alai said.
He cited a collapse in basic services such as garbage collection and poor management of the city’s infrastructure.

Alai also accused the governor of privatizing services that should be publicly provided, including vaccinations and food handling certifications, which he said disadvantages residents and local businesses.
Alai explained that the MCAs had quickly gathered the minimum 42 signatures required to table the impeachment motion, but they are targeting support from 100 MCAs to demonstrate unity.
“In just 15 minutes of collecting signatures, we had already surpassed the required 42. But we are not stopping at the minimum. We are building a movement of 100 strong MCAs to ensure Governor Sakaja exits office,” he said.
Alai emphasized that the process will be entirely member-driven and free from external influence.
