The National Police Service (NPS) has announced several road closures and traffic diversions in Nairobi ahead of the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) final scheduled for Saturday, August 30.
The measures are aimed at managing the heavy flow of traffic and ensuring security around the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, where the highly anticipated match will take place.
“The final is expected to draw thousands of fans, making traffic management is our key priority,” NPS stated.
“Our goal is to ensure safety, security, and smooth traffic flow as thousands of fans make their way to Kasarani.”
Nairobi motorists have been advised to prepare for significant traffic disruptions, particularly on the Thika Superhighway and adjoining routes.
According to the police notice, diversions will take effect from 6:00 am to ease congestion and enhance security around the stadium.
Motorists traveling between Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) and Thika, Juja, and Ruiru are advised to use alternative routes.
For those heading from the Nairobi CBD to Thika Road, drivers will be diverted through Kiambu Road at Exit 4, with a roadblock set up at Muthaiga.
Motorists on the Thika Superhighway heading to Mwiki will be redirected via Ruaka, Baba Dogo, Lucky Summer, Nairobi River, and Mwiki.
Traffic from Thika, Juja, and Ruiru heading to the CBD will use the Northern Bypass or Kiambu Road, with another roadblock at the Ruiru interchange.
Those traveling from Githurai to Nairobi CBD are advised to use the Githurai 44–Kiambu Road route.
Fans without vehicle access passes heading to the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, from the CBD will be required to use the service lane at Exit 7 and Exit 8.
“The National Police Service continues to work collaboratively with relevant agencies and urges all motorists to cooperate with officers on-site to ensure smooth traffic flow,” the notice read.
Additional police officers will be deployed along the routes, with strict enforcement measures against traffic offenders.
