The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Chief Executive Officer, Captain William Ruto, is mourning the heartbreaking loss of his daughter following a tragic road accident.
In a statement issued on Saturday, April 4, KPA confirmed that the accident occurred on Friday evening while the CEO was travelling with his family.
“We are deeply saddened to announce that our Chief Executive Officer, Capt. William K. Ruto, was involved in a tragic road accident yesterday evening while traveling with his family,” the authority stated.
KPA revealed that while other family members survived the crash with injuries, the young girl succumbed to her injuries.
“Regrettably, his daughter did not survive the accident. We extend our thoughts and deepest condolences to Capt. Ruto and his family during this time of immense grief. Capt. Ruto and the rest of his family are currently in stable condition and under close medical supervision. We wish them a quick and full recovery,” the statement added.
Emergency responders from Mombasa and Taita Taveta counties, alongside KPA teams, swiftly moved to the scene to rescue the family.
The authority expressed gratitude to Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir and Andrew Mwadime for their rapid response and support during the rescue operation.
“We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Mombasa Governor H.E. Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir and Taita Taveta Governor H.E. Andrew Mwadime for their swift assistance and support following the accident,” KPA noted.
Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing, with the family appealing for privacy as they come to terms with the devastating loss.
“We are cooperating with the relevant authorities as they establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. We respectfully request for the family’s privacy during this difficult time,” the authority added.
Meanwhile, in a separate tragedy, 10 people lost their lives in a grisly road accident along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway near Gilgil on Friday night.
According to Gilgil Sub-County Commander Winston Mwakio, the crash occurred at around 9:30 p.m. near the Lake Oil bridge when a matatu collided with a stationary trailer.
The public service vehicle, operated by Likana Sacco, was heading from Naivasha to Nakuru at the time of the accident.
Only two passengers survived the crash and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Police have since launched investigations, with the wreckage towed to a local station, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the mortuary for identification and post-mortem examinations.
