Former Tanzanian MP Seleman Bungara, popularly known as Bwege and famed for the viral “Uliskia wapi” phrase, has died.
According to reports, Bungara passed away on Monday in Dar es Salaam while receiving treatment, bringing to an end a political career that spanned more than a decade.
He represented Kilwa South constituency from 2005, winning multiple terms under the Civic United Front before later joining ACT Wazalendo.
Bungara was widely regarded as an outspoken legislator, known for confronting issues directly on the floor of Parliament and maintaining a strong presence in opposition politics.
During his tenure, he served in several committees, including Agriculture, Livestock and Water, HIV and AIDS Affairs, and later the Social Development and Services Committee.
He rose to regional fame in 2020 after a press conference where he dismissed defection claims, asking journalists, “Uliskia wapi?” a phrase that quickly went viral.
The phrase was widely adopted in Kenya as “Olisikia wapi,” becoming a popular meme used in online conversations and even printed on merchandise.
Despite his popularity, Bungara lost his seat in the October 2020 General Election after garnering 10,096 votes against CCM’s Ally Kasinge, who secured 22,521 votes.
His political journey faced challenges, including a 2020 arrest alongside ACT Wazalendo leader Zitto Kabwe during a political meeting. They were later released on bond.
Bungara also made headlines in 2016 following a confrontation with the Deputy Speaker over his nickname ‘Bwege’, underscoring his bold and unfiltered personality.
His death has sparked widespread reactions, with many remembering him as a charismatic leader whose humour and distinctive communication style resonated beyond politics.
