A tragic road accident has claimed lives and left multiple people injured along the Nyeri–Nyahururu highway near Dedan Kimathi University of Technology on the evening of Saturday, March 28, 2026.
According to initial reports from the scene, the crash involved a public service vehicle (matatu) and a lorry transporting logs. Witnesses indicate that the lorry lost control before colliding with the matatu, leading to a devastating impact that caused significant damage and casualties.
Authorities have confirmed at least 15 fatalities, with several other passengers sustaining injuries—some of them serious. Emergency responders rushed to the scene shortly after the incident, working to rescue those trapped in the wreckage and transport the injured to nearby medical facilities.
In the immediate aftermath, conflicting information circulated on social media suggesting a much higher death toll. However, officials have since clarified that the number of confirmed deaths currently stands at four, cautioning that details may evolve as investigations and rescue efforts continue.
The stretch of road where the accident occurred is known for heavy traffic and has previously been flagged as a high-risk area, particularly for large commercial vehicles. Saturday’s incident has once again raised concerns about road safety and enforcement measures along the route.
Police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash, including whether mechanical failure, speeding, or road conditions played a role.
More updates are expected as authorities release additional information and verify the full extent of the casualties.
