Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has asserted that he has the political clout to win elections independently, insisting that his personal popularity can rival that of established political parties in Kenya.
“Isn't the name Babu Owino bigger than 100 per cent of the political parties in Kenya? I am a political party. I can be elected even without a party,” Babu said.
Speaking to a reporter, Owino clarified that he is not rebelling against his party, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), but is operating firmly within its principles.
“We are not rebelling in ODM, we are not rebels. We are working within the dictates and principles of democracy,” he said.
Babu Owino explained the ODM principle, saying the minority have their say while the majority has their way, emphasizing that the party values both inclusivity and respect for collective decisions.
Owino’s comments come amid reports of internal dissent within ODM, particularly after some party members reportedly booed former party leader Raila Odinga during a recent event.
He criticized the actions of those he described as disloyal.
“Those who are rebels are the ones who went to boo Baba the other day. Ain’t that lack of loyalty? That is disloyalty.” he added.
The MP stressed that his ability to succeed electorally is grounded in his connection with voters rather than party machinery.
“I can be elected even without a party,” Babu said.
Owino made it clear that his actions and statements are guided by the party’s constitution and democratic values, underscoring that he remains a committed member of ODM.
