A tense confrontation unfolded after Nairobi Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service Geofrey Omatoke Mosiria publicly called out pedestrians for failing to use a designated footbridge, instead choosing to cross a busy road at ground level.
In a video circulating online, Mosiria is seen confronting several individuals, urging them to prioritize their safety by using the overhead crossing. He questioned why members of the public were ignoring infrastructure put in place to protect them.
“Who set up that footbridge? This is a public place—go back and use the footbridge,” he said firmly while addressing pedestrians attempting to cross the road dangerously.
The visibly frustrated official repeatedly stopped individuals, including motorists and pedestrians, directing them to return and use the footbridge. He warned that crossing the road at ground level not only puts lives at risk but could also lead to serious accidents.
“You are taking pictures with cars and risking your life. If something happens, who will you blame?” Mosiria posed.
At one point, he singled out an elderly man crossing while distracted on his phone, emphasizing the dangers of inattentiveness near moving traffic.
“Old man, go back and use the footbridge. You could get hurt,” he cautioned.
Despite resistance from some members of the public, Mosiria insisted that the safety measures must be respected. He noted that the footbridge had been properly constructed and is fully accessible for use.
The incident highlights ongoing challenges in enforcing road safety measures in the city, where pedestrians often ignore footbridges and zebra crossings, increasing the risk of accidents.
Authorities continue to urge the public to adhere to traffic rules and use designated crossing points, warning that failure to do so could have fatal consequences.
