Kenya Meteorological Department has released its weekly weather forecast, predicting continued rainfall in parts of the Highlands, the Lake Victoria Basin, and sections of the Rift Valley.

 

The forecast, covering the period from 9th to 15th September, also highlights high daytime temperatures in the country’s northern and coastal regions and strong winds along the coast and lowlands.

 

According to the to Kenya Met, rainfall is expected in a few parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and some areas of the Rift Valley.

 

“Residents in the Highlands should expect occasional morning showers followed by afternoon thunderstorms in several counties,” Kenya Met stated.

 

“Night showers are likely in some areas, so farmers and commuters should take necessary precautions.”

 

Daytime temperatures are forecast to exceed 30°C in much of the Coast, North-eastern, and North-western Kenya. Cooler nights are expected in parts of the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley, and the Mt. Kilimanjaro region, with temperatures dropping below 10°C in some areas.

 

“Strong southerly to south-easterly winds exceeding 25 knots are expected along the Coast and South-eastern Lowlands,” Kenya Met added, highlighting possible disruptions for marine and lowland activities.

 

The regional outlook indicates mostly sunny conditions in North-western Kenya, with occasional showers in Turkana and Samburu counties. In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley including Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nairobi, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, Laikipia, Kirinyaga, and Murang’a cloudy mornings with light rains are expected, followed by sunny intervals, with afternoon and night showers likely in a few places.

For the Coast, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, and coastal Tana River, sunny intervals are forecast during the day, partly cloudy nights, and morning or night showers in some areas.

 

Selected temperature forecasts indicate Mandera will be the hottest town at 37.0°C, followed by Lodwar at 36.0°C and Garissa at 35.0°C.

 

Nyahururu is expected to record the coldest night at 7.0°C, with Nyeri and Narok also experiencing chilly nights. Coastal towns such as Mombasa and Malindi will see maximum temperatures of 30–32°C and minimums of 21–23°C.

 

The KMD also reviewed the past week’s weather, reporting rainfall in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and Central Rift Valley.

 

“The past week saw some unusually high rainfall totals, especially in Bungoma, which recorded up to 91mm,” Kenya Met said.

 

“Residents should remain vigilant as we enter a period of variable rains and changing temperatures.”

 

The department advised the public to monitor daily (24-hour) and 5-day forecasts from meteokenya and consult county-specific forecasts from local meteorological offices for timely updates.
