Malala Speaks after Njeri Maina Accuses Him of Being Mole in Gachagua's Camp

Cracks have started surfacing in former Deputy President turned opposition leader Rigathi Gachagua's DCP party.

Tensions rose after Kirinyanga County Women Representative Njeri Maina launched a scathing attack against the deputy party leader, former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala.

Maina alleged that Malala had been involved in efforts to undermine the former DP within the Mt Kenya region.

In a biting post on X (formerly Twitter), Maina publicly accused Malala of being a key player in an alleged plot to create a splinter group meant to challenge Gachagua’s influence in Kirinyaga County, a core region in what has largely been regarded as Gachagua's stronghold ahead of the 2027 General Elections, in which he aims to unseat his former boss, President William Ruto.

“I am aware that yesterday, between 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM, you met a section of MCAs allied to Anne Waiguru from Kirinyaga County at Golden Palm Kenol. I’m also aware that the agenda was to create a splinter group to fight Rigathi Gachagua's foot soldiers in that county. You facilitated the MCAs in attendance with Kshs. 20,000; monies you obtained from persons who seek to derail the agenda of the people and the united alternative government," Maina alleged.

Additionally, the lawmaker accused Malala of betraying the people and the cause, questioning his motives.

She also reminded the former Kakamega senator of past accusations against him regarding his handling of party funds when he was the UDA party secretary-general.

She added:

“You infamously had the bad habit, as SG in your former party, of soliciting money from everyone and anyone for favors. Unfortunately, it seems that you have not changed one bit.”

Hours later, Malala took to Facebook, making his first public statement since the claims surfaced.

While Malala did not directly address Maina, he shared an update regarding party status and his standing with Gachagua, suggesting all is well.

"Yesterday evening, I had fruitful consultative engagements with elected members of the county assembly of Kirinyaga ahead of today's meeting with our party leader. We are focused on enhancing political inclusivity as we prepare for the forthcoming general election. Chama iko imara. We scatter none but gather all," he said.

Malala also shared photos from the meeting with Kirinyanga MCAs and also with Gachagua.

It is worth noting that Malala and Gachagua united in DCP after both being ousted from powerful positions in President Ruto's regime.
