Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has shed light on the circumstances surrounding a tragic road accident involving Captain William Ruto, the Managing Director of the Kenya Ports Authority, which claimed the life of his daughter.
Speaking after visiting the family, Murkomen revealed that the accident occurred on Friday evening in the Taita Taveta County, where Captain Ruto was travelling with his family. The vehicle carried five people, including his children, when the accident happened.
According to the CS, the crash was caused by a stationary trailer that had been left unattended on the road without proper warning signs or safety measures. The vehicle Captain Ruto was travelling in reportedly collided with the trailer, leading to the fatal injuries.
“It is deeply painful. Unfortunately, in that accident, the family lost their daughter,” Murkomen said, describing the incident as a tragic loss not only to the family but also to the nation.
He confirmed that Captain Ruto survived the crash and is currently in stable condition.
Doctors who attended to him conducted thorough medical examinations and assured that he is out of danger.
Murkomen placed blame on those responsible for the trailer, citing negligence among drivers and transport supervisors who failed to ensure road safety compliance. He noted that such recklessness continues to cause preventable tragedies on Kenyan roads.
The CS urged all motorists to exercise caution, emphasising the importance of road safety and adherence to traffic regulations to avoid similar incidents.
The accident has sparked renewed concern over the presence of poorly marked or abandoned heavy vehicles on highways, a persistent hazard that has contributed to multiple fatal crashes across the country.
