Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o has officially confirmed that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party will field a presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Monday during an interview on TV47, Nyong'o emphasized that ODM, as an independent political party, retains the right to present candidates for all elective positions.
"Our party will field a presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 general elections," he said.
"Currently, that is the position because the party is an independent one and it has the right to field a candidate."
Nyong'o also stressed that while ODM intends to contest all elective positions, the party remains open to dialogue or possible coalition talks with the Kenya Kwanza administration as the elections draw near.
“However, if there is a discourse leading up to the elections to do otherwise, we will cross that bridge when the time comes,” he added.
Earlier in April 2025, ODM leader Raila Odinga reiterated the party’s opposition status despite collaborating with President Ruto’s government on specific issues.
Speaking then, Raila said, “ODM is still in opposition, but we are working with the government to stabilise the country’s economy and security,” Raila explained.
Raila clarified that ODM’s partnership with the Kenya Kwanza administration, especially on matters like the anti-protest law, does not negate its intention to present a presidential candidate.
“We are preparing to field our candidate in 2027,” Raila confirmed.
