Rigathi Gachagua Warns William Ruto to Steer Clear of Family Matters

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued a pointed warning to President William Ruto, urging him to stay out of private family affairs and to focus instead on national unity.

Speaking in a candid, emotionally charged address, Gachagua appeared to question Ruto’s ability to unite the country, suggesting that unresolved personal or familial issues undermine such efforts.

“How do you say you are uniting the country? You cannot unite your own family,” Gachagua remarked. “You’re not bigger… you’re not even functioning,” he added in a sharp critique that hinted at deeper frustrations within political circles.

In what seemed like a broader commentary on leadership and conflict resolution, Gachagua referenced what he described as the “science of GBV,” linking domestic instability to wider societal challenges. While his remarks were not fully elaborated, they underscored the importance of order and harmony beginning at the family level.

The former deputy president also shared a personal anecdote about inheritance planning, drawing from his own family experience to make a case for structured conflict prevention.

“My brother had a complicated family. So he did a will that took care of everybody so that there is peace,” Gachagua explained. “And there has been peace for nine years… Don’t fight it. Learn from it. You’ll find it useful.”

He went on to add that the will included proper legal planning, saying it is used by institutions such as the Kenya School of Law, and can help families avoid disputes and maintain long-term stability.

“The will is a very good will, it is being used in the Kenya School of Law, as an example of how to make a good will when you have a complicated family,” he added.

Gachagua’s remarks come amid ongoing political tensions and shifting alliances, with his comments likely to fuel further debate over the intersection of personal matters and public leadership in Kenya.

While President Ruto has yet to publicly respond, the statement adds a new dimension to the evolving political discourse, raising questions about boundaries between governance and private life.
