Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has expressed concern over the increasing cases of violent muggings within the city centre, warning that criminals are targeting women and using dangerous weapons.

In a statement posted on his social media account on Monday, Sonko said thugs armed with crude weapons such as knives, machetes and both real and toy guns have been attacking unsuspecting members of the public.

“Cases of thugs using crude weapons like knives, machetes, real and toy guns to steal from unsuspecting members of the public within the CBD have become rampant. Their main target are women,” Sonko stated.

He urged the National Police Service to act swiftly and restore safety in the capital, noting that residents and visitors alike have become vulnerable.

“As a former leader of this Nairobi of ours I’m humbly appealing to the National Police Service to move with speed and bring these culprits to book. Their days are numbered,” he added.

While making the appeal, Sonko shared a video of a woman narrating how she narrowly escaped a robbery attempt in the CBD.

He said the incident reflected the growing boldness of criminals who have been targeting city residents.

His appeal comes amid growing concern from Nairobians over insecurity in the central business district, where incidents of muggings and daylight robberies have been reported in recent weeks.
